Apple Music is still stunningly bad, many years later

How is this service still such a disappointment?

Apple Music officially launched on June 30, 2015. That’s over six years ago at this point, which is an eternity in the world of technology. Despite Apple’s attempts to make its music product the preferred game in town for its ecosystem faithful, many still use other competing services. Because despite Apple having that six long years to make Music better, it is still bad. And bad may be too kind of a word.

Several years in, Apple Music still has no community to speak of. You don’t get the rampant playlist sharing you see on Spotify and others. You can’t search and find droves of awesome music collections — the equivalent of mixtapes for today’s digital music fans.

But even that would be somewhat forgivable if Apple Music was remotely reliable. For a service backed by one of the most valuable technology companies in the world, the constant timeouts, frequent stops and crashes are beyond unacceptable. I have Apple Music as a part of Apple One, and every time I use it, I’m reminded why I’d never pay for the service on its own.

I suppose that’s why Apple One is such a good deal. All the services bundled together — even without adding Apple Music to the mix — cost less than if you got them separately. Take your $10 for News, $10 for Fitness, $5 for Arcade and $5 for Apple TV+ and you’re already at $30.

But wow, if I ever had the change to pay $10 less, or even $5 less, to banish Apple Music from that bundle, I would. It’s a letdown to the point where slapping a “beta” on it wouldn’t be enough of an excuse. Apple should be embarrassed by what Music is right now. The company needs to put time and effort into fixing it.
