At long last, Bungie has revealed more about the next season of Destiny 2. Dubbed “Season of the Splicer,” this latest round of content will see Guardians once more teaming up with Mithrax, the Fallen Kell of the House of Light. This time around, the Vex are the seasonal big bad, as the time-shifting robot race has somehow managed to trap Earth’s Last City in never-ending (lowercase d) darkness. With the help of Mithrax, it’ll be your mission to delete the Vex threat and restore (lowercase l) light to the Last City once more.

Destiny 2: Season of the Splicer - Release date and more

You’ll get to play all the “Season of the Splicer” content in all the places Destiny 2 currently exists now, which includes, PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Google Stadia. When will that season drop? And what can you expect to see in it? Let’s get into the nitty gritty.

The release date

Destiny 2‘s “Season of the Splicer” is set to arrive on May 11, 2021. Interestingly, Bungie also dropped the end date for the season, which the studio is not known for doing. “Season of the Splicer” is scheduled to wrap up on Aug. 24, 2021. That’ll at least give you a heads up on how you should pace yourself going through the season content — at least if you want to remain current and get everything finished before the next season launches.

Other details

If you follow Destiny 2 at all, you may know that transmog is one big feature coming in “Season of the Splicer.” You may also know that a lot of fans aren’t particularly happy with how it’s being implemented. It remains to be seen whether Bungie will stick to its guns on this, or whether the act of turning armor into universal ornaments will remain a grind-filled slog. My money is on the studio following its usual pattern of hearing the backlash and responding with a halfway fix that’ll make some people happy, but not everyone.

With that unpleasantness out of the way, though — who wants to talk about freezy guns?

As part of “Season of the Splicer,” a new Exotic Sidearm will arrive in the form of Cryosthesia 77k. Judging by the season’s latest trailer, Cryosthesia 77k will do as a Stasis weapon should — it’ll freeze the bad guys.

How will this gun be received in the Crucible, where Stasis still feels a bit out of control in many, many instances? Your guess is as good as mine. Still, there aren’t a lot of Stasis weapons available at the moment. It’s nice to get another one, even if it might be slightly overpowered for a time.

On the activities side, “Season of the Splicer” will debut a new six-Guardian matchmade called “Override.” Judging by past seasons and their activities, you’ll have to play this one a lot to make progress on your Seasonal Challenges. Hopefully it is fun and not as monotonous as “Defend the Warmind Towers.”

“Season of the Splicer” will also have a weekly mission for players to complete called “Expunge.” We don’t know much about it at this point, other than the whole thing has a real Vexy Tron feel to it. This may be the part of the upcoming season I’m most looking forward to. Aside from the freezy gun.

We’re just a short time away from “Season of the Splicer” at this point, so if you want to stay up-to-date, you’ll need to knock out your “Season of the Chosen” challenges within the next week. The new season of Destiny 2 arrives on May 11, 2021.
