This dating app wants you to swipe on memes

Tired: Swiping headshots. Wired: Swiping memes.

Imagine you did not meet the love of your life at the grocery store, or at the bar. It was not a blind date that brought you together, nor was it a mutual friend’s wedding or a concert you both attended. Imagine it was memes. Your shared love of memes. That is what a dating app called Schmooze wants for all people. It wants you to find meme love.

It’s all throwing darts in total darkness anyway. Why not swipe on some memes and see what happens?

TechCrunch took a look at this app today, and I was instantly intrigued. According to the site, the app was founded by Vidya Madhavan, an Indian woman who was thinking about attending grad school in the U.S., and “cold-emailed 10 people on LinkedIn who she could see attended U.S. business schools and hoped might be helpful.”

One person replied to her. Their emails turned from business school to jokes. Fast forward to the present day, and they’re married. Madhavan credits their “shared sense of humor” for the match. She conceived Schmooze as a way for others to experience the same wild ride; first for friendships, and later — as she learned more about how people were using it — for dating.

Schmooze has seen a fair amount of success so far. As TechCrunch notes, “a beta test in late summer with 200 Stanford students has since led to more than 10,000 downloads around the country,” which is nothing to sneeze at. It also secured some seed funding recently to the tune of $270,000.

Whether a meme dating app is a thing that’ll take hold quite as widely as the more traditional apps, or whether we wanted it or not, we’ve stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let’s get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta’aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He’s well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on freehold.

You can download Schmooze now via the App Store or Google Play Store.
